Life isn't fair. There is no method to the madness of events, no great plan of a higher power. We are born, we live and we die, a conscience drawn together from atoms, then cast into oblivion a century later. Yet most minds cannot understand the oblivion. Most minds cannot fathom nothingness. All sanity would snap under the sands of time, as people do even less with their lives, by trying to extend them. Thus a buffer was created. A barrier against the impending doom: religion. Started by hominids over come by grief, religion slowly devours the world, even as it  protects it. Yet we could not live without it. Civilization could only rise from savagery if there was a punishment that no man could escape, looming over it. And the genius of this idea continues, as there is now a reward for breaking all of Darwin's laws. And thus the goal of life shifted from survival to eternal bliss, or evading eternal damnation, and conveniently most of the codes were practical but no one would follow them unless there was weight. All known society lies at the feet of the original genius behind this idea, or the lucky skitzofrenic. But, if religion was the match that lit the torch of civilization, what use does the match have if it's about to burn out?

Why is there is such a rush for fame? Happiness happens anonymously, yet we scratch and claw our way, striving for an unachievable goal. To be singled out above the rest, not only of talent but of anything is the highest form of art. The greatest gift to humanity is recognition; the recognition of ability, of fears, of existence. No one has confidence without someone telling them they're right or wrong. The world revolves around gaining prestige or being noticed through acts of humiliation. Yet why? Why bother with the system? If we waste away our lives, fighting over the shreds of attention that may come our way? Why is there such a need for assurance that we exist? Because we're human, and we can't stop. Riches don't matter if there are not poor people to look upon the wealthy in awe. Talent does not matter, unless there are less talented people to impress. The scraps of fame we receive in our small lives just whet the hunger inside for fame or notoriety, as no one can escape humanity's greatest vice. The actions we do, the things we say, the words we write, if done in front of people are only helpless attempts to be great, to be put on display for all to see. And then as the spotlights shine on us, we can only smile. Hell is other people, but only when we are ignored.
